Carl Hiassen might be my most recommended author to friends. He is best known for his comic crime fiction - hugely entertaining but also touching, finding that perfect level of chaos in both plot and character. However, he is also deeply concerned by the destruction of the natural world. He started out his professional career reporting on environmental issues, and now seamlessly weaves these themes into his novels. He cleverly draws attention to human impacts on the environment in gripping and wildly funny adventures, and for this reason is one of my favourite authors.
Of the selection that I've read, Bad Monkey is probably my go-to recommendation (although Skinny Dip takes a close second). A couple fishing on their honeymoon in Florida Keys reel in a severed arm, and this gives former detective, Andrew Yancy, an opportunity to rise back into the police force (having recently been downgraded to restaurant inspector for assaulting his married lover's husband with a vacuum cleaner). On his crime-solving journey, he meets many a questionable and comedic character to keep you turning the pages. Yet, it is Hiassen's narrative voice which makes readers laugh-out-loud, his dry wit and blunt confrontation of human follies and failings making for extremely funny reading.
Hiassen's books are great for most moods and occasions - readable but with a lot of something to them. Also, if you're trying to get (back) into reading, they are likely an excellent place to start.
