An Unexpected Journey, Part Two

Updated: Jan 21

Last time I started writing a blog, I was a week into (what ended up as) three years travel in New Zealand, Australia, and the Philippines. I began my first post with a quote from The Hobbit, watched on our flight from Hong Kong to Auckland. To encourage him on his journey, Gandalf says to Bilbo: “The world isn’t in maps and books. It’s out there.” And it was. It was three years of exploration, wonder, and freedom. However, now back in the UK and settled into a job, it's time to share other adventures and interests – this time all things green. I have noticed (and squirm at) the irony, that I spent the last few years on the other side of the world and now want to talk about sustainability and saving the planet. Call me hypocrite if needs be. However, I’d like to think that is part of the point of writing about these things – to acknowledge that no one is perfect when it comes to the environment, but we’re all muddling through and hoping to do better. This will also be a space for nature – the lighter shades of green amidst the scary abyss that is tackling the climate crisis. I’m not going to claim it will tell you anything you haven't heard before, but I hope it can provide some light and hope around a difficult subject, and perhaps some new ideas to try to be a little more sustainable. It will also give my keen audience of three (you know who you are) something to read on a long journey. I also hope that this writing will reflect that adventure and wonder is not just about being in far-flung places, but can also be found at home (and indeed in maps and books). A lot of this is about doing what you enjoy, making time outside work to be creative and have fun. It is also about enjoying the small things - a great cup of coffee, new socks, a walk in the sun or rain - whatever it might be. I noticed reading back on my previous posts, very few of them described wild adventures or must-see travel stops; in hindsight, my marketing as a travel blog was highly misleading. They were mostly about finding homes in new places and with new people. I’m currently doing that very thing, but hugely enjoying the sense that this might be somewhere I stay settled for a little while.
